ASHBY IVANHOE RESERVES 1-3 ST ANDREWS RESERVES
PRESIDENTS TROPHY 2ND ROUND
SATURDAY 18TH FEBRUARY 2012
Ashby Ivanhoe Reserves were knocked out of the league cup at the second round stage after losing 3-1 against Division Two highflyers St Andrews Reserves.
The first half was a poor affair with all the action in the middle of the park on a heavy pitch and it took until the 33rd minute for a goal-scoring chance and from it the visitors took the lead. It came from a throw-in on the left touchline and when the ball was played down the left a cross into the area found a player on the penalty spot and he controlled the ball before slotting past Chris Hodge in the Ashby goal and with no further action it remained that way at the break.
The second half started badly for Ashby when within a minute of the restart a St Andrews player went bursting into the box only to be brought down by the keeper and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and the penalty was dispatched sending Hodge the wrong way to double the visitors’ advantage.
On 50 minutes St Andrews extended their lead even further with a third goal when a shot was saved by Hodge but the ball ran loose to the edge of the area and from a central position the second effort found the net.
Just before the hour mark it was nearly 4-0 when a cross into the area resulted in a shot at goal which hit the underside of the cross bar before going on to strike the inside of the post and falling into the keepers arms.
Ashby improved after that and with twenty minutes remaining they pulled a goal back when a corner was swung into the area and substitute Tom Nolan got the final touch and the ball found the net just inside the far post to make it 3-1.
St Andrews did have a few more chances in the final ten minutes but some wayward shooting saw the scoreline remain the same but by that stage they were comfortably in control to run out 3-1 winners.
